While it's likely been overshadowed this week by Facebook's announcements with regard to its new Graph Search feature, another social network luminary had some big news of its own this week: Myspace - the pioneering social network that basically owned the space in the middle of the last decade - has reopened to the public with a new music-focused makeover. Heavily promoting star investor Justin Timberlake's new single "Suit & Tie" (featuring Jay-Z), the new Myspace sports a slick new music-discovery interface designed to help users find new tunes, artists and mixes, with a simple 'Discover' button that loads a horizontal stream of musical info and tidbits, plus a streamlined player control set at the bottom of the screen. All in all the neat, minimalist design is about a hundred miles away from the garish old UI which used to greet users (and which News Corporation purchased for an unseemly US$580 million back when the site was still going gangbusters). It'll be interesting to see if the new JT-led Myspace can garner a significant audience in the new social marketplace - where now its competitors look to be more the likes of Spotify, not Facebook.
